What is this city, from another age? Bringing together old photographs and contemporary views with archaeologist’s meticulousness, Leonard Pitt shows us a Paris that we hardly have the opportunity to contemplate anymore, even though we are familiar with its districts, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Maubert, Les Halles, Beaubourg, Opéra… Such, then, was the face of the capital before Haussmann’s regularization, before the more or less fortunate reshuffles of the twentieth century. The images of old Paris, silent but eloquent witnesses, illustrate that a city is certainly made of stones but above all of illuminations and errors, of grandiose visions and mediocre calculations, of meditated plans and chances… Only the passage of time gives us the measure of this.
